The City of Stockton is the forth largest city in California’s Central Valley Region and ranks as the state’s 13th largest city. Located in Northern California less than 50 miles from Sacramento and just 31.5 miles north of Modesto, Stockton is located along Interstate 5, State Route 99 and State Route4.
Connected westward to the San Francisco Bay by the San Joaquin River, Stockton is home to one of California’s two inland sea ports. Also, in and around Stockton are thousands of miles ow waterways and rivers that are part of the California Delta.
Early on, the Miwok Indians lived in the Central Valley among the California Delta’s waterways, using them for food and transportation. And, the Northeast area of Stockton along the Calaveras River and up into the foothills is where the Yokut Indians lived.
In 1848 a German immigrant, Charles Weber, thought he would try his hand at mining, however, he soon realized that serving the needs of the gold miners would be a lot more profitable.
In 1849, Weber acquired the Rancho Campo de los Franceses Mexican land grant and founded Stockton. The area now known as Weber Point is the same spot where Captain Weber built the first permanent residence in the San Joaquin Valley.
During the early years, Stockton was known by several names, including “Tuleburg”, “Fat City” and “Mudville”. However, Weber decided on Stockton in honor of Commodore Robert F. Stockton.
Officially incorporated on July 23rd, 1850, the first city election was held 8 days later. Early settlers in Stockton included gold miners from all over the world, and this historical diversity is reflected in local street names and architecture, and in the faces of a majority of it’s cities population.
In 1883, Benjamin Holt settled in Stockton, and with three brothers he founded the Stockton Wheel Company, and later Holt Manufacturing Company. Holt built the first track-laying machine to plow the soggy San Joaquin Valley Delta farmland, and when photographer Charles Clement said it ‘crawled like a caterpillar’, he stated “Caterpillar it is. That’s the name for it!”
