The City of Manteca is located in California’s Central Valley, a little over an hours drive from San Francisco, Sacramento and the Sierras. It was founded in 1861 by Joshua Cowell when he claimed around 1,000 acres and built houses on the corner of Main and Yosemite. In 1873, the Central Pacific Railroad laid track directly through the area.
Early on, Manteca settlers were farmers with wheat as the main crop due to dry summers. Back in the early 1900’s, central valley farmland was inexpensive and the new irrigation methods, an accessible river system and railway showed promise for getting agricultural products to market. A farming boom started, with almonds, alfalfa, grapes, pumpkins, walnuts and dairy operations. Many central valley farmers began to prosper with the availability irrigation water provided by SSJID in 1913.
As the area’s farm population started demanding more services, the village of Manteca began attracting businesses, and in turn, new housing. In 1918 the town incorporated, and soon companies big and small discovered Manteca.
Now, as the area’s growing farm population created a demand for more services, the village of Manteca began attracting new residents and businesses. By 1918 the town incorporated, Joshua Cowell became its first mayor and companies, large and small began to discover Manteca .
As recently as the 1970’s, Manteca existed primarily on agriculture. However, the continuing rise of housing prices in the Bay Area forced people to look eastward for less expensive housing.
Recently Manteca has become a popular choice for commuters from the Bay Area and the 1990’s saw an increase in the city’s population, the construction of it’s third high school and lots of activity on the bypass portion of State Route 12o, also known as the Manteca Bypass.
The City of Manteca hosts the Not Forgotten Memorial Day Event, which is the largest commemoration for veterans on the West Coast. Year after year, this event is held on the Sunday before Memorial Day and draws in over 20,000 people to remember the veterans.
Manteca’s climate is hot during the summer when temperatures tend to be in the 90’s and cold during winter when temperatures tend to be in the 40’s. The warmest month of the year is July with an average maximum temperature of 93 °F (34 °C) degrees Fahrenheit, while the coldest month of the year is December with an average minimum temperature of 34 °F (1 °C).
