The City of Elk Grove, located in Northern California is located just south of the state capital of Sacramento. Founded in 1850, Elk Grove started out as a stage stop. Located about 15 miles south of the historic Sutter’s Fort, Elk Grove became a crossroads for business, entertainment, mail service and agriculture, and acted as home base for gold miners in nearby communities.

Initially, the town developed around a stage stop on the Monterey Trail, though after the railroad passed by east of town, Elk Grove’s center shifted to its present location. “Old Town” Elk Grove is located about a mile east of State Route 99, the north-south artery of the California’s Central Valley.

Although the town developed around agriculture, it would eventually become a residential suburb of Sacramento. Most newer housing developments in Elk Grove lie west between Highway 99 and Interstate 5, the major north-south highway for the U.S. West Coast, in two areas locally called “Laguna Creek” and “Laguna West”.

As of 2012, Elk Grove’s population is 155,937. The second-largest city in Sacramento County, Elk Grove earned the title of the fastest growing city in the U.S between July 1, 2004 and July 1, 2005.

Fire protection, emergency medical services, and parks and recreation services in Elk Grove are provided by the Cosumnes Community Services District, an independent special district agency.

Elk Grove’s climate consists of warm, dry summers, cooled off in the evenings by Delta breezes, while winter temperatures range from 43 – 58 degrees. The rainy season lasts from November to April with an average annual precipitation of about 12″.

Local communities and festivals include the Elk Grove Western Festival in May, the Annual 4th of July celebration, the Strauss Festival in July, the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and the Community Harvest, Giant Pumpkin Festival and Safety Faire in October, and in November to kick of the holidays, the Festival of Lights Parade and Christmas tree lighting on the Saturday of Thanksgiving week-end. In December, Old Town Elk Grove hosts and old-fashioned Dickens Faire featuring local retailers and craft vendors located in the historic section of Elk Grove.
